Disability Insurance is probably one of the most misunderstood employee benefits. At the same time, it is one of the most important because not having it can lead to a financial disaster from which an employee may never fully recover.
Some important facts to consider:
- The average disability absence is two and a half years
- Disabling injuries and illnesses account for 55% of employee absences
- Three out of ten workers between the ages of 25 and 65 will experience an accident or illness that will keep them out of work for three months or more
- About one in seven people can expect to be disabled for five years or more before retirement
- Over 90% of disabling accidents and illnesses are not work-related, and therefore are not covered by workers’ compensation
- More than one in five adults believe that Unemployment or Social Security will take care of them if they become disabled
- Less than half (39%) of the 2.1 million workers who applied for SSDI benefits were approved in 2005
- The average monthly Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit is only $978
- More than 70% of the private sector workforce has no long-term disability insurance
- Disability causes nearly 50% of all mortgage foreclosures, compared to 2% caused by death
